Admissions
Students who wish to apply to the Virginia School of the Arts for admission to the academic year or Summer Program must audition. There are three ways to audition for VSA; at one of our tour sites, by videotape, or in person at VSA. No matter which audition format you choose, you must bring a $25 audition fee and two photographs. In the photographs, girls must wear pink tights and solid-colored leotards with no warm-up accessories or skirts. Boys must wear white t-shirts and dark tights. Include one pose in first arabesque and one a la seconde either en l’air or par terre.
Tour Site
Please arrive at the audition site at least 30 minutes prior to the audition. The audition will be a ballet technique class taught by one of our faculty. No warm up accessories or skirts may be worn and girls should bring pointe shoes with them. For audition tour sites, please see our website or see our advertisements in the December and January issues of Pointe magazine, or call the VSA Admissions Office at (434) 847-8688.
By Video
You may call the Admissions Office to have an audition form mailed to you or you may download a copy of the form from the website. Video auditions must be on either VHS or VHSC format tapes and should be no longer than 10 minutes. At the beginning of the video, please stand facing the camera and give your name, age, current grade in school, name of your studio(s) and instructor(s). You should also indicate whether you are applying for the Summer Program, the Academic Year Program, or both. The video is a demonstration of classical ballet technique and must include some barre work and center work. Girls should also include work on pointe. Send the video along with the form, photographs, and audition fee to the attention of the Admissions Office.
At VSA
You may audition, by appointment, Monday through Saturday at the Virginia School of the Arts. If you are considering the Academic Year Program, we encourage you to visit on a weekday so that a tour of EC Glass High School and the dormitories can be included. Please call the Admissions Office to arrange your visit.
Procedure after Audition Application
Shortly after your audition, you will receive a letter or an email indicating the results of your audition. If your audition is successful, you will be accepted pending a final review of your completed application.
Given the limited number of openings, it is important that all deadlines listed on the fee schedule be met. Receipt of a non-refundable deposit will reserve a space for the summer programs. For the Academic year program, the non-refundable deposit and the VSA enrollment agreements must be received to reserve your place. If after review of your application, VSA decides to rescind your acceptance, a refund of the deposit will be granted.
Academic Registration
Following acceptance to the VSA Academic Year Program, you will receive registration materials for E.C. Glass High School. The Glass Guidance Department will help in organizing your academic class schedule. The fee for academic classes at Glass is paid directly to the Finance Office of the Lynchburg City Schools.
Financial Aid
Need-based Financial Aid is available on a limited basis at VSA. There is no financial aid available for the summer program. The financial aid form must be returned with the parents’ and student’s (if applicable) prior-year federal tax returns with all attachments before awards can be made. Questions about the procedure and thedeadlines should be directed to Admissions.
