Broadway Bound Musical Theatre

Broadway Bound is Virginia School of the Arts' new program for the serious high school musical theatre student.  It is designed to augment the students' high school drama experience and to encourage their overall artistic development by offering an intensive and comprehensive dance and music curriculum.  Recognizing the time constraints of a serious high school drama student, Broadway Bound consists of three, eight -week sessions; students may enroll in any or all of the sessions.  Students participating in multiple sessions will develop greater advanced skills and will receive individual training appropriate to their level.  The jazz-based program is augmented by a regular schedule of ballet, tap, voice, and dance improvisation classes taught by as distinguished resident faculty.

Eligibility

Broadway Bound is open to all area high school students (grades 8-12) currently in good standing at their home schools.  All classes are mandatory.  It is the responsibility of the student to arrange his/her schedule to avoid conflicts with rehearsals, practices, or other extracurricular activities.

Class Synopsis

Ballet - Instruction in fundamentals and ballet vocabulary, with emphasis on stretching and strengthening exercises.

Dance Improvisation - This class focuses on building strength, flexibility, range of movement, the experience and understanding of creative impulse, and the relationship between words and physical language. Students will learn to express themselves more confidently through movement by using basic improvisational tools.

Jazz - Classes include techniques to increase strength, flexibility, control, and acute awareness of specific body movements.  Students will gain greater poise, balance and rhythmic sense, as well as improve their skills and knowledge concerning musical theatre dance styles.

Voice for Musical Theatre - A "Laboratory" class where students will practice a wide range of songs and styles from the Musical Theatre repertory.  Participants will develop their vocal technique, music reading, and performance skills.
