The Program
Virginia School of the Arts students are placed in levels according to ability. For each level there is a course of study designed to develop physical strength, mental acuity, placement, flexibility and the musicality necessary to advancement to the next level. There are 22 hours of classes per week where students study Ballet Technique, Pointe, Men's Variation, Repertoire, Pas de Deux, and Modern Dance.
VSA also provides a dancer/athlete nutrition session and a course called "Senior Transition". Senior Transition is designed to prepare the students for the world beyond VSA. Dance classes focus on skills training, training which continues on a daily basis even while students prepare for performances. Performance experience is an essential part of the overall program of preparing students to become professionals.
