The Program

At VSA dance students are placed on the basis of ability in one of four levels. For each level there is a course of study designed to develop physical strength, mental acuity, placement, flexibility and the musicality necessary to advancement to the next level. In addition, students take courses in such areas as theater for dancers and body alignment. There are 22 hours of classes per week where students study Ballet Technique, Pointe, Mens Variation, Repertoire, Pas de Deux, and Modern Dance.

During the academic year, each student also takes weekly at least two of the following courses in Exploratory Arts: Theater for Dancers, Dance History, and Dance Composition. A dancer/athlete nutrition program and sessions in living skills are also provided. Seniors meet weekly in a course called "Swimming Lessons" designed to prepare them for the world beyond VSA. Dance classes focus on skills training, training which continues on a daily basis even while students prepare for performances. Performance experience is an essential part of the overall program of preparing students to become professionals.
